Karl sent me some fascinating pictures of a vintage hoe that his grandfather made out of a shovel.

He writes:

“My grandfather modified this hoe alternative. They used it to dig corrugated cardboard when the tractor turned. It was for gravity irrigation on their Idaho farm. It is a modified shovel. When he put in a pivot, I asked about one of his excavators. It is most likely older than me. I thought you might find it interesting. "

I love that kind of ingenuity. I bet you couldn't do this with a modern shovel because no one makes such good steel heads anymore. Vintage tools are the best.
