In the world and the northeastern United States
June 11, 2020
When you think of mosquitos floating around your family in the evenings, you are probably thinking of only one type of mosquito. Did you know that there are thousands of different types of mosquitoes worldwide? Each mosquito species has a Latin scientific name such as Anopheles quadrimaculatus.
Mosquito species in the world
There are over 3,000 different types of mosquitoes worldwide. Mosquitoes in other areas transmit particularly scary diseases such as the West Nile virus and the Zika virus.
Mosquito species in the northeastern United States
About 200 species of mosquitoes are known in the United States, 60 of which live in the northeast. You will find that some serious illnesses are transmitted to you, your family and your pets. The most common in our region are:
- Culex pipiens, AKA the northern mosquito: Transmits the West Nile Virus
- Aedes albopictus, AKA the Asian tiger mosquito: Transmits the Zika virus, the yellow fever virus, the dengue fever, the Chikungunya fever and the Usutu virus.
While you can find these mosquitoes and diseases in the northeast, you can proactively keep them away from your lawn by removing standing water sources and planting mosquito repellent plants with your green thumb.
