If you need to mow landscape features, there's nothing better than a hand-held mower. If you have a lot of ground to cover, there's nothing like a mower with a large deck. Would you like a mower that can do both? This is where Scag's large handheld mowers come in. They are compact and easy to maneuver, but they are also available with decks from 32 to 61 inches. When you add features like the hydrostatic drive, you get mowers that can be used almost anywhere while offering the mowing speed of a small ZTR.
All models are equipped with motors from the Kawasaki FS series. These V-Twins don't have the FX's advanced filter system, but everything else carries over, including the rotating grass chopper screen and built-in cleaning holes. That means you get commercial reliability with low weight. This motor is mounted between the deck and the controls so that it is easily accessible for maintenance work.
Scag offers two deck designs with their walk-behinds: 32 and 36 inch Advantage cutter decks and 48, 52 and 61 inch Velocity Plus decks. The Velocity Plus adds bumpers to withstand bumps and uses slightly thicker metal than the Advantage Cutter. Otherwise, these decks are almost identical. Both use multi-layer shells with built-in baffles to increase the vacuum in the mowing chamber.
The result is a good cut quality with maximum durability.
However, there is a big difference between these decks if you want to mulch. Velocity Plus decks can be equipped with the Hurricane Plus mulching system. This adds more baffles, a metal mulch plug and high lift blades with double serrated edges for superior mulching performance. Advantage Cutter Decks can be equipped with a mulch plug, a turbo baffle and high lift blades. The mulching performance is good, but cannot keep up with Hurricane Plus. With both decks, you can add a cloth bag grass catcher to the slide to capture clippings. This works like an excavator on a small walk-behind, so you can lift the entire bag out and throw it away when it's full.
These decks are paired with the same Ogura couplings that are used in Scags ZTRs. These have an adjustable air gap so you can compensate for wear and tear to extend the life of the clutch.
Scag produces three large models: SW, SWZ and SWZT.
This range of mowers uses a 5-speed peerless transmission. In the upper aisle, these mowers can reach 6 mph. A double belt drive improves reliability and reduces slipping when the mower gets wet. The SW is available with 32, 36, 48 and 52 inch decks.
The controls are mounted on a three-digit handle that can be turned up and down to fit operators of different heights. Spring-assisted EZ handle controls reduce hand fatigue.
The SWZ uses a hydrostatic drive system that enables a zero turning radius. A combination of Hydro Gear pumps and Parker drive motors delivers a top speed of 7.4 MPH. Scag's Adjust-a-Track system controls neutral and tracking with a single dial. It has the same three position handles and EZ handle controls as the SW. Scag makes the SWZ with 36, 48, 52 and 61 inch decks.
Like the SWZ, this mower line uses a hydrostatic drive. Instead of separate pumps and motors, however, two Hydro-Gear ZT-2800 gearboxes are used. Since the motor and pump are installed in one unit, no hoses or fittings can leak. Together, these units can bring these mowers to a top speed of 7 mph.
The SWZT uses fixed controls, but has an angled handle, as you would find on a standing mower. This allows the operator to use a more natural grip and reduce wrist fatigue.
These mowers are offered with 36, 48, 52 and 61 inch decks. When adjusting the deck height of the SWZT, an adjusting pin is used that leads into clearly marked holes, as you can find on a ride-on ZTR.
Kawasaki guarantees FS series engines for three years of commercial use.
Scag guarantees SW, SWZ and SWZT two years of commercial use or either three years or 500 hours of residential use. For SW and SWZ models, the cutting deck spindle and the Velocity Plus decks are covered for three years. All Scag products are insured for 90 days when rented.
